Mt. Washington Hotel, nestled amidst the breathtaking White Mountains of New Hampshire, has stood as a beacon of elegance and grandeur since its inception in 1902. Located near Mount Washington, in the town of Carroll, New Hampshire, the hotel opened on July 28, 1902 with a staff of no less than 350. This architectural marvel, often dubbed the "Grand Dame of the Mountains," boasts a rich history intertwined with American culture and hospitality.
Designed by renowned architect Charles Alling Gifford, the hotel exudes timeless charm and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. It has hosted several notable guests, including presidents, celebrities, and dignitaries, solidifying its status as a symbol of luxury and prestige.
Amidst the opulence of the Mt. Washington Hotel lies a treasure trove of dining artifacts, including these oval plates that we recently found at a local thrift shop. Made by Scammell China Company (Lamberton Works) in the city of Trenton New Jersey. Circa 1930 at the height of the manufacturing of hotel dinerware for Scamell, these plates have a top monogram in a twig/ stick detail with overlapping letters "MW" and a repeating pattern of balsam pine boughs and pine cones around the rim reflective of what the diners may have seen looking out the windows at the White Mountains.
The discovery of these rare Mt. Washington Hotel Dinner Plates at a thrift store underscores the enduring allure of vintage collectibles and the thrill of uncovering hidden gems. Beyond their monetary value, these plates serve as tangible links to a bygone era of elegance and sophistication.
In an age where thrift store shopping can feel disheartening with soaring prices, crowded aisles, and merchandise picked over before it even hits the floor, stumbling upon a find like this reignites the excitement of the hunt. It's proof that treasures are still out there, waiting to be discovered by those willing to search.
